Privacy Policy

This policy describes the information collected during a visit, the reasons it may be processed, and the limited cases in which another service receives it. By continuing to use Schenectady County Criminal History, you agree to the practices stated below.

Data You Give Us Directly

Search Queries

A name or location entered in a search tool is sent to the outside provider that operates that tool. The provider processes the query and supplies its response. We do not retain or create a local log of those search terms.

Messages and Contact Submissions

An email sent to us may be kept long enough to answer and maintain the related correspondence. It remains within our organization unless disclosure is required by law.

Data We Gather Automatically

Our systems receive standard technical details whenever a visitor loads a page:

  • The IP address assigned to your device
  • Which browser you are using and its version
  • Your device type and operating system
  • The pages you visited and how long you stayed on each
  • The site that sent you here, if any
  • Timestamps for each page view

Cookies and Analytics

Cookies are small device files that help measure traffic patterns, popular pages, and points where visits end. Analytics providers aggregate this usage information. Browser controls can block cookies, although some site functions may then work differently.

What We Do With This Data

  • Diagnosing errors and maintaining reliable page performance
  • Routing a submitted query to the selected search provider
  • Measuring which resources visitors use most often
  • Operating and improving the website
  • Displaying advertising that may reflect visitor interests

No Criminal-Record Data on File

We do not keep, assemble, or sell a database of personal criminal-history records. The site publishes general directions to Schenectady County custodians, including the Sheriff, local courts, the New York State Division of Criminal Justice Services, and the New York State Sex Offender Registry. We are not a consumer reporting agency under the Fair Credit Reporting Act, and visitor data is not turned into a report about any third party.

Third-Party Search Partners

Outside companies supply the search-box services. Information submitted to a box is handled under that provider's privacy policy. Each provider chooses its own retention and disclosure practices, which we do not control. Review those terms before sending a query.

Links to Other Websites

Links may lead to government offices, court portals, state resources, legal-aid organizations, or outside search services. Once a visitor leaves this site, the destination's privacy rules apply. Check them before providing personal information.

Some advertising providers may use activity across websites to select ads. That processing occurs on the provider's systems.

Who Might See Your Data

Personal data is not sold. Limited information may be available to:

  • Search partners that handle queries you run on our site
  • Analytics services we use to track traffic and performance
  • Ad networks that place ads on our pages
  • Law enforcement or government bodies when a valid legal order requires it

How We Protect Your Data

Reasonable technical and organizational safeguards protect the data we handle. No internet system can be guaranteed secure, so we cannot promise that unauthorized access will never occur.

Users Under 18

The website is intended for adults, and we do not knowingly collect personal information from anyone younger than 18. If such data is identified, it will be deleted.

Your Data Rights

Applicable New York consumer-protection law, including General Business Law §349, may provide rights beyond those listed here. Subject to legal limits, a visitor may:

  • Ask for a copy of what we have on file about you
  • Have us fix information that is wrong
  • Request that we erase your data
  • Opt out of certain kinds of data processing

Updates to This Policy

This policy may be revised as services or legal duties change. The current version will appear here with its effective date.
